  • The Biology of Holiday Overload: Why Your Body Feels Exhausted (Even When You’re Having Fun)

The Biology of Holiday Overload: Why Your Body Feels Exhausted (Even When You’re Having Fun)

With glowing lights at every corner, cozy gatherings with loved ones, holiday shopping, and festive foods, the holidays truly feel magical. What your biology experiences, however, can feel very different. December, for all its joy and cheer, brings overstimulation, irregular routines, dopamine spikes, and increased immune and metabolic demand. Together, these create seasonal allostatic load, which is the cumulative strain your body experiences when it is constantly adapting.

The month combines multiple biological stressors at once. On their own, any one of these changes might be manageable. In December, they overlap and compound, which is why even fun experiences can leave you feeling unexpectedly tired. When you understand the science behind this fatigue, it becomes easier to support your body and move through the season with more clarity and steadiness.

    The Dopamine Cycle

Dopamine is often called the feel-good chemical, but it plays a much larger role in motivation, anticipation, and reward. Holiday environments activate these pathways constantly. Shopping, gifting, socializing, bright displays, festive foods, and digital notifications all create repeated dopamine surges.

The challenge comes afterward. Every dopamine spike is followed by a natural dip, and these dips are what create feelings of brain fog, irritability, or sudden loss of motivation. In December, the frequency of these spikes increases, which means the dips become more frequent too. Over time, this cycle of highs and lows becomes surprisingly draining, even when you are enjoying yourself.

What Is Really Happening To Your Body During The Holidays

    1. Stress and Depleted Energy

Holiday stress prompts your adrenal glands to release cortisol, the hormone that helps you respond to pressure. Short-term cortisol is helpful, but chronic spikes from packed schedules, emotional demands, or constant rushing can strain your stress system. This also affects your mitochondria, the cellular structures that produce energy. When mitochondrial efficiency decreases, you feel it as fatigue, reduced motivation, or difficulty staying focused.

    2. The Immune System Works Overtime

Cold, dry air and increased exposure to others make winter a prime time for viral spread. Your immune system stays more active during this season, which requires additional energy and nutrients. When immune cells are working harder, fewer resources are available for daily energy, creativity, and stamina. Combined with travel, disrupted sleep, and indulgent meals, your immune system may feel stretched thin, leaving you more susceptible to seasonal bugs.

Festive treats are one of the joys of the season, but frequent sugar intake causes noticeable blood sugar fluctuations. Rapid spikes can make you feel wired, while the crashes that follow can create fatigue, irritability, and cravings. Your body’s insulin response works hard to correct these swings. Repeated cycles place extra demand on your metabolism and can contribute to December sluggishness.

How to Support Yourself This Season

    1. Nourish and Steady Your Stress System

Your stress system functions best when supported with rest, hydration, and nutrients that assist adrenal and cellular function. Vitamin C, B vitamins, and magnesium play meaningful roles in energy production and stress balance. Many people also find adaptogenic herbs, such as ashwagandha or rhodiola, helpful for maintaining resilience during periods of high stress. Even a short grounding routine in the morning, such as breathing exercises or quiet time, can help steady your internal rhythms.

    2. Support Your Immune System

Boost your immunity this holiday season with power players like vitamin C, zinc, echinacea, and elderberry. Pair them with quality sleep, hydration, and even bone broth for an extra layer of protection.

    3. Eat Intentionally Before Events

Heading to a party or shopping trip on an empty stomach can make blood sugar spikes worse. Choose a balanced meal with protein, healthy fats, and fibre beforehand to stabilize energy and help you power through.

    4. Build in Moments of Quiet

December often overwhelms the senses. Scheduling even a few minutes of daily downtime can help reset your nervous system. A short walk, stretching routine, or quiet reading break gives your brain a chance to recover from constant stimulation. These small pauses act as a reset button, bringing your system back toward balance.

    The Bottom Line

The holidays do not have to feel like an unmanageable drain on your energy. When you understand how stress, immunity, blood sugar, and dopamine shape your biological experience, it becomes much easier to give your body what it needs. With a few supportive habits and a little extra awareness, you can move through the season with steadier energy and more genuine enjoyment. This year, consider giving yourself the gift of balance and resilience.

  • Why Colds Hit Harder in Fall & Winter (and How to Fight Back)

Why Colds Hit Harder in Fall & Winter (and How to Fight Back)

As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, many of us notice a familiar pattern. Suddenly, sniffles and coughs seem to be everywhere. If you’ve ever wondered why fall and winter feel like prime time for colds, the flu, and that general seasonal slump, you’re not imagining it.

There’s real science behind why your immune system can take a hit during the colder months. Understanding what’s happening inside your body is the first step to taking smarter, more effective action to keep yourself healthy all season long.

So… Why Do We Get Sick More In Cold Weather?

Contrary to what your grandma may have told you, it’s not the cold itself that makes you sick. Instead, it’s a combination of environmental and biological changes that create the perfect conditions for viruses to spread and your immune defences to weaken. Let’s break it down.

    Drier Air Means Drier Sinuses

Cold air holds less moisture. When temperatures drop, the air becomes drier, and so do your nasal passages. Since your sinuses are one of the first lines of defense against airborne viruses, dryness makes them less effective at trapping and clearing out pathogens.

More Time Indoors Means More Exposure

When it’s cold, people naturally spend more time indoors. That means more shared air, less ventilation, and closer contact with others, all of which increase your chances of coming into contact with viruses.

Less Sunlight Means Lower Vitamin D

Sunlight is the primary natural source of vitamin D, a nutrient that plays a vital role in supporting the immune system. Shorter days and less outdoor time often lead to lower vitamin D levels, making it harder for your body to fight off infections.

    More Stress Means Less Resilience

The transition into fall often comes with packed schedules, back-to-school routines, and holiday planning. Higher stress levels can interfere with your immune response, leaving you more vulnerable to getting sick.

Your Immune System Shifts With the Season

Your immune system naturally changes throughout the year. In colder months, some immune responses slow down while inflammatory processes increase. This seasonal shift can make it harder to avoid illness and slower to recover when you do get sick.

Fight Off Winter Bugs Before They Start – How to Support Your Body Through the Season

While you can’t change the weather, you can take simple steps to support your immune health during the colder months. Here’s how:

    Hydrate

When we turn up the heat in our homes, cars, and offices, the air gets drier. That dry air can dehydrate the mucous membranes in your nose, which normally act like a sticky shield against viruses. When that shield dries out, it’s easier for viruses to attach and sneak into your system.

Hydration isn’t just about drinking water; it matters for your nasal passages, too. A humidifier can help restore moisture to the air you breathe.

    Focus on Immune-Supportive Nutrients

    Include key nutrients like:

    • Vitamin C to help boost immune response
    • Zinc to support healing and defense
    • Vitamin D3 to compensate for reduced sunlight
    • Elderberry for added antiviral and antioxidant support

Depending on your diet and lifestyle, you can get these from food, supplements, or both. Together, these nutrients act like reinforcements, helping your immune system stay ready for whatever winter throws your way.

    Eat for Gut Health

Eat fiber-rich foods and include fermented options like yogurt, kefir, or sauerkraut to support a balanced gut microbiome, which plays a major role in immune function.

    Top Up On Sunlight

Shorter days and colder temperatures can mean less time outside. With shortened sunlight exposure, your body produces less vitamin D—an essential nutrient for immune function, mood regulation, and even your sleep-wake cycle. No wonder fatigue, restless sleep, and the winter blues tend to creep in. Even in sunnier southern states, cooler weather can mean more time indoors, which has the same effect.

Try to get outside for at least 10–15 minutes in the morning. Natural light exposure helps regulate your circadian rhythm (hello, better sleep), lifts your mood, and supports your immune system.

    Prioritize Sleep

Sleep is when your body recovers and resets. Aim for 7 to 9 hours of quality rest per night to give your immune system time to do its job properly.

    Manage Stress

Low stress equals stronger immunity. The holiday season brings joy, but it also piles on stress. Between busy schedules, family obligations, and even feelings of loneliness, stress hormones like cortisol can stay elevated. Chronic stress suppresses your immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to whatever bug is going around. Remember to slow down and take some time for yourself.

    The Bottom Line

There’s no doubt about it: Colds and flus can be more common in the colder months. By keeping your immune system strong with the right nutrients, soaking up natural light, and managing stress with intention, you’ll give yourself a better chance to thrive all fall and winter long.

  • Post-Holiday Recovery

    Post-Holiday Recovery

We started this month by giving you ways to manage holiday stress. Now, as we end the 2024 season, we’re here to help you prepare for recovery.

The time after the holidays is often when we realize just how much we’ve given, physically and emotionally. The transition from a season of excitement and socializing to the quieter days of January emphasizes just how much energy the holiday season really requires. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or simply exhausted after the holiday hustle, you’re not alone! Now that the holiday season is almost behind us, it’s time to give yourself permission to pause, recharge, and reset—because your well-being deserves it.

Here are our top 5 ways to recover after the holiday madness:

    1. Start Slow

For many of us the Holiday season was a constant go-go-go! With that said, now is the time to slow it down a bit. Don’t rush into full productivity mode. Take one task at a time. Life’s everyday normalcy and urgencies will return, but allow yourself to soak in the last bit of the holidays and take it one new task at a time. Take any extra time you have free to just sit by the fire with a mug of hot chocolate.

    2. Declutter and Organize

Clean up any party mess and leftovers, and slowly (and sadly) start putting away any decorations that don’t need to be brought into 2025. Work on creating a clean space for the new year!

    3. Reset Your Routine

Without a doubt, the holidays can mess with our sleep, extra activities, hobbies, workflow, and really any routine we have going pre-holiday season. Go to bed and wake up at consistent times to recover from irregular holiday schedules, pick up where you left off in your workouts, or start doing whatever made you feel good on a daily basis before the holiday stress.

    4. Detox Your Mind and Body

Lots has probably happened during this time of the year. Lots of planning, conversations, and food. Now that it’s winding down, consider meditation, journaling, or yoga to clear mental clutter and consume healthier foods to help detox your body from all the holiday indulgence.

    5. Recover Your Finances

There isn’t much to say here except that it’s time to start saving again! 😅

As we bid farewell to the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s essential to take a step back and allow ourselves the time and space to recover. Remember, self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessity, especially after a season of giving. So, take a deep breath, embrace the quiet moments, and give yourself permission to recharge. You’ve earned it! As we move into 2025, let’s approach the new year with intention, clarity, and a renewed sense of well-being. Wishing you a peaceful, restorative post-holiday season and a fresh start to the year!

  • The Importance of Gratitude

    The Importance of Gratitude

As we enter a season where giving is at the forefront of many traditions and celebrations, it’s also a perfect time to pause and reflect on one of the most important practices in life—gratitude. With so much emphasis on gifts, presents, and material things this time of year, we want to take a moment to send a heartfelt thank you to you—our loyal Champ, reader, and community member. Your support means the world to us, and we couldn’t be more grateful for you.

Gratitude is a powerful mindset and a daily practice that can transform our lives and relationships. In this week’s blog post, we explore the power of gratitude, diving into why it’s so important and how we can all start incorporating more of it into our daily lives.

The term “gratitude” comes from the Latin word gratia, which can mean grace, graciousness, or thankfulness, depending on the context. In many ways, gratitude incorporates all of these meanings. It refers to a sincere appreciation for what one receives and has, whether tangible or intangible. Through gratitude, individuals are able to recognize the positive aspects of their lives, often realizing that the source of these blessings lies, at least in part, beyond themselves. Consequently, cultivating gratitude fosters a sense of connection to something greater—whether it be other people in your life, nature, the world around you, life, or a higher power.

What does Science say about gratitude?

According to the Harvard School of Medicine (2021), one study found that participants who wrote about things they were grateful for experienced greater optimism, better health, and more physical activity compared to those who focused on irritations or neutral events.

The article also mentions how gratitude improves relationships. A study concluded that couples who expressed gratitude for their partners felt more positive and were more open to discussing relationship concerns. In workplace settings, expressing gratitude can boost employee motivation; a study of university fundraisers showed that those who received a thank-you message from their manager made 50% more calls than those who didn’t. It is gratitude that allows individuals to realize that they wouldn’t be where they are without the help of others and to appreciate those others in their lives.

Many other studies have observed that being grateful can also support greater health, happiness, and wisdom in ourselves and our communities. Ultimately gratitude is more than just a momentary good feeling, but rather a practice that can help build continuous satisfaction with life.

    Ways to practice gratitude

Keep a gratitude journal: Make it a habit to write down or share with a loved one thoughts about the gifts you’ve received each day. As mentioned, studies have shown that writing out what you are grateful for can improve health and make one more optimistic.

Write a thank you note or message to someone

Let someone know in writing how thankful you are for their support, presence, help, or love. They will always have that note as a personal reminder of the impact they have made on your life.

Engage in random acts of kindness

Helping others not only benefits them, but it can deepen your own sense of appreciation for what you have and give back.

    Before Eating, Give Thanks

Take a moment before each meal to reflect on something you’re grateful for—whether it’s the food you’re about to enjoy or something that happened during your day. If you have to eat dinner with others like a partner or family, create a tradition of sharing something you’re grateful for around the dinner table, helping to reinforce a culture of appreciation.

    Nighttime Reflection

Before going to sleep, think back on your day and identify at least three things you’re grateful for. This can help improve sleep quality by focusing your mind on positive thoughts before resting.

In conclusion, gratitude has a much greater impact than given credit for—it’s a transformative practice that can deeply enrich our lives. By making gratitude a daily habit, whether through journaling, expressing appreciation, or simply pausing to reflect on the positive aspects of our lives, we cultivate a mindset that fosters well-being, strengthens relationships, and brings greater satisfaction. As we embrace this season of giving, let’s remember that the most meaningful gifts are often intangible, and the act of giving thanks has the power to create lasting joy and connection.

  • Holiday Cheer or Holiday Fear? How to Combat Seasonal Stress

Holiday Cheer or Holiday Fear? How to Combat Seasonal Stress

The holiday season is upon us, and if you’re feeling the pressure, you’re certainly not alone. With only 19 days remaining until Christmas and 25 days until New Year’s Eve, the festive to-do list can quickly become overwhelming. From last-minute shopping and preparing for family gatherings to organizing the perfect holiday dinner, it often feels like a continuous marathon of tasks and responsibilities.

But here’s the good news: You don’t have to let holiday stress steal your holiday joy. Here are our top 5 ways to reduce your stress this holiday season and allow yourself to feel the holiday cheer a little more.

    1. Plan ahead and prioritize: Less than a month may not feel like much time, but if you break down a list of things you need to do by the day, chances are you’ll find you can get it done quicker than you thought while still having some spare time for yourself. Map out key dates, such as gatherings, sales, and shopping deadlines, and account for personal downtime! Avoid over-committing by focusing on a few meaningful activities instead of trying to do it all. Group similar tasks so you can increase efficiency.

    1. Budget Wisely: There is no denying that money plays a huge role in stress management, especially during the holiday season. Decide on a realistic budget for gifts, travel, food, and entertainment early, and stick to it. Creating a detailed budget not only helps you avoid last-minute financial stress but also allows you to prioritize what’s most important to you—whether that’s giving meaningful gifts, enjoying special experiences, or simply saving money.

    1. Communicate and Set Boundaries: Let friends and family know if you’re feeling overwhelmed and need a breather, and don’t be afraid to ask for some extra hands- especially when hosting!
With so many people coming together during the holiday season, conflicts can sometimes arise. However, by maintaining strong personal boundaries, you can minimize the impact of these stresses and keep tensions at bay.

    1. Embrace Imperfection: During this time of year it is easy to get caught up in making everything look and feel perfect- since it is supposed to be “the most wonderful time of the year”. However, this mindset can create added unnecessary stress. Instead, allow yourself have realistic expectations. No holiday gathering is perfect. Don’t let something like forgetting to defrost the turkey or imperfect gift wrapping ruin the day. Be flexible, and let it become another holiday memory.

    1. Take Part in Enjoyable Activities: Enjoying leisure activities, especially all of the festive ones, are an important part of psychological well-being. Make sure to do the things that provide you with enjoyment and fun to allow yourself to feel the holiday spirit.

The holiday season doesn’t have to be clouded by stress and feeling overwhelmed. It can also be a time to relax and enjoy the moment. By taking small, mindful steps to plan, budget, set boundaries, embrace imperfection, and prioritize joy, you can make this time of year feel more manageable and, ultimately, more enjoyable. Remember, the holiday season is about connection, love, and celebration—not perfection. So take a deep breath, let go of the pressure, and focus on the things that truly matter. With just 12 days left, there’s still plenty of time to embrace the holiday spirit and create moments that you’ll cherish for years to come.

Wishing you a peaceful, joyful, and stress-free holiday season!
