  • Why We All Need Green In Our Life

Why We All Need Green In Our Life

Have you ever wondered why humans love being in nature so much? It might have to do with the color green. For centuries, green has been a vibrant symbol of the environmental movement and healthy living. While we most often associate green with the planet and the trees that help mitigate climate change, the benefits of all that is green also extend to our health. From forests to salads, from green tea to money, the color green reigns supreme in many aspects of our lives. In this article, we will explore the science behind the color green and discuss why we all need it in our lives.

The Science Behind The Color Green

Science says that green is the one color that the human eye can perceive better than any other color (Jimison, 2017). This has to do largely with evolution and our ancestors. Long ago, our ancestors were surrounded by green landscapes and foods, making them more receptive to the color. It is why we can tell that a green banana is not ripe yet or that when forests are all green, it means it’s summer. Our eyes love the color green!

Studies have shown that the color green extends beyond our eyes and has the ability to soothe our nervous system (Avril, 2017). By surrounding ourselves with green, our whole body goes into a relaxed state. When you look at the color green you may associate it with serenity and tranquility, making it a visual cue to relax and take a deep breath. Moreover, the colour green has for many years been used as a positive affirmation, often being the color of choice for checkmarks and yes buttons. It is the color synonymous with luck, freedom, hope, creativity, renewal, and vitality and has been proven to show signs of mood improvement. Green is the color of life!

How To Get More Green In Your Life:

    1. Get outside!: As we’ve already discussed, human’s instinctual habitat is the outdoors. Take a walk in the park, picnic on the grass, or just admire the trees.
    2. Add house plants to your home: When you cannot get outdoors, having a piece of it with you inside can boost the air quality and your mood.
    3. Drink green tea: Studies suggest that consuming green tea may positively affect skin health, help with weight loss, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, among other benefits (McDonell, 2023). Moreover, drinking green tea increases attention and focus without the jitters that coffee gives you.
    4. Eat more salads: We know this isn’t for everyone and may not be as fun as eating a plate of pasta, but salads are rich in vitamins and minerals that are otherwise difficult to get from other foods. With all the recipe blogs that exist today, there are endless recipes that can be used to make a boring salad extra fancy!
    5. Plant a garden: One of the best ways to incorporate more green into your life is by establishing an herb garden, a salad garden, or a kitchen garden. Not only will you be surrounded by green and consume it regularly, but gardening itself can also amplify the calming effects of green.
    6. Drink Nutra Champs Super Greens: This is our favorite tip! This wholesome blend combines organic greens, berries, antioxidants, probiotics and digestive enzymes into one huge energy, immunity & gut-health blend.

Now that we’ve presented six ways to GO GREEN, please feel free to connect with us and share how you incorporate green practices into your life!

  • Loneliness Has Negative Health Consequences, These are 5 Ways to Create Connection!

Loneliness Has Negative Health Consequences, These are 5 Ways to Create Connection!

Have you ever heard of the phrase “you can be in a crowded room but still feel lonely?” Unfortunately, it rings true for many North Americans today in our society as loneliness statistics climb to staggering numbers. The Western world is technologically connected in more ways than ever before, yet many humans are finding themselves disconnected from in-person and face to face interactions. In North American culture many of us are heavily focused on being “individualistic” whether that be living alone, climbing the corporate ladder, or becoming successful. While there is nothing wrong with striving for these ambitions, it can come at a cost – meaningful connections. When all is said and done, our relationships with others and ourselves is the most important thing that most people look back upon. Community and quality time is not only lacking in our society, it is actually having negative health consequences. In 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) even announced that loneliness is a pressing global health threat which can be equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day! How do we combat this loneliness? Through connection – to ourselves and by fostering healthy relationships. If you’ve been feeling lonely or know someone who is currently struggling with this feeling, we are going to share 5 helpful ways to create more connection in your life.

If you’re interested in learning more, keep on reading..

    1. Be present with the people around you

One of the keys to connection is being present. It’s impossible to really connect if you’re on your phone, distracted, thinking about your to-do lists, or simply disengaged. One of the greatest gifts we can offer another human is a listening ear. People want to be seen and heard. When you make the time for others with your presence in conversations, they will do the same for you. If you find it difficult to stay present, you’re not alone! Being present is a practice and here are a few ways you can practice being in the present moment:

    • Take a few deep belly breaths and long exhales to ground into your body. Deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, allowing you to relax and be in the moment.
    • Make eye contact! This may feel uncomfortable at first if you aren’t used to it but if you start making an effort to look into someone’s eyes when you’re speaking it actually shows you’re listening and engaging intently.

    2. Volunteer

There are endless benefits of volunteering. Being of service and giving our time to a cause not only feels good, but it also provides a multitude of ways to connect with others. When you volunteer you get the chance to meet new people, make connections, boost your confidence, and feel a sense of purpose. In almost every town or city there are multiple ways to volunteer your time, whether it be at a food bank or a local community centre. Do some research on what’s around your local town and see how you can get involved and create more connection in your life.

    3. Plan outdoor activities with groups of friends or other families

Now that the weather is getting nicer, it’s a great opportunity to host some outdoor get togethers with groups of people. Hosting a beach volleyball tournament, barbecues at the park, or picnics/potlucks, are a great way of getting people together and enjoying each other’s company. If you do get together with some friends outdoors for a beach or picnic day, here are a few activity ideas you can try together:

    • Water balloon toss: Form teams of two lines facing each other. In each successful toss of the balloon filled with water the participants must take a step back and keep throwing the water balloon to each other further and further away. After every successful toss a step back must be taken. If the water balloon falls, you are eliminated from the game.
    • Hula hoop contest: This game is all about using the hips and core! Participants must do what they can to keep the hoops spinning the longest.

    4. Find local groups within your community

Nowadays, we’re lucky to have online platforms that allow for the ability to find connection within our local communities. Whether you’re a fan of hiking, dancing, or baking, there might just be a local group in your community that already exists for that thing! By utilizing Facebook or the app Meetup you can use key words to search for groups within your area that you can join. It’s not always easy to get out of your comfort zone and take a step into do something new, but it could be exactly what you need for connection!

    5. Make time to be with yourself

Sometimes feeling less lonely is also about the ability to enjoy the solitude of your own company. Spending time with yourself shouldn’t be avoided, it’s a great way to connect to your own self. Whether you take the time to read a good book, put on a face mask for a little self-care, or take a relaxing bath, make the most of time by yourself. It could be one of the best things you do for your mental health!

All in all, in a society that can have the tendency to prioritize productivity over meaningful connections, it is up to us to claim what makes us truly happier. In order to feel less lonely, we must create opportunities in our lives and communities to enjoy the company of others. After all, our relationships are the most important things we have in life!

  • Why Ditching Alcohol Is Becoming More Popular

Why Ditching Alcohol Is Becoming More Popular

Growing up as kids, lots of us witnessed our parents and the young adults in our lives indulging in alcoholic beverages such as wine, beer, or various other forms of liquor. People would gather for family events, social events, or even sporting events and drinking would be involved. For thousands of years, humans have been drinking alcohol, overtime it has become a social aspect of life for a variety of cultures and backgrounds. It’s not until more recently that studies have been coming out about the impacts (both short and long-term) that alcohol has on the body. In small doses, alcohol acts as a stimulant, but overall alcohol is a depressant and slows down communication between the brain and body. The World Health Organization published an article last year stating, “no level of alcohol consumption is good for our health.” In fact, the substance has been classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. This may come as a surprise, how can something that is actively part of of our cultures and socialization be this harmful? Well, it’s with this emerging information that more and more people are opting to ditch alcohol and take on soberiety.

In this blog post, we are going to go in more detail about the impact alcohol has on the brain and body and mention some natural and healthier alternatives to alcohol.

If you’re interested to learn more or want to make the switch from alcohol to sobriety, keep on reading!

Negative Health Impacts From Alcohol Consumption

    Short-term effects:

Did you know that within 5 minutes of your first sip of alcohol you begin to feel the effects? The first place that alcohol impacts is your brain. At first you might feel relaxation, the urge to become more talkative, and even more confident. As the consumption continues, other short-term effects begin to take over such as:

    • Impaired coordination
    • Slurred speech
    • Unstable emotions
    • Nausea
    • Loss of balance
    • Loss of bladder control
    • Inability to remember
    • Potential loss of consciousness

It is in this state of less inhibition where danger has the potential to occur. Under the effects of alcohol humans have an increased risk of injury, violence, self-harm, sleeping problems, vomiting, and hangovers. There is even the potential of alcohol poisoning which occurs when someone’s BAC (blood alcohol level) can get too high. This has the potential to be fatal.

    Long-term effects of alcohol:

Being a consistent drinker of alcohol, long-term effects may take place in both the body and mind.

Here are just some of the systems that alcohol can impact and cause damage to overtime:

    • Digestive and endocrine glands
    • Inflammatory damage
    • Blood sugar levels
    • Nervous system
    • Circulatory system
    • Sexual and reproductive health
    • Skeletal and muscle system
    • Immune system

With all of this emerging research, it’s no surprise that many people, especially younger generations are opting to go alcohol free!

Here are just some of the benefits of living a sober life:

    • You will look and feel better
    • You will save money
    • You will have more meaningful and deep relationships
    • You will live your life to the fullest

If you use alcohol for social anxiety, to feel relaxed, or to get a feeling of happiness here are some alternatives:

    • Kombucha
    • Matcha
    • Caffeine
    • Adaptogens
    • Mocktails

Health should be a priority not just for a few, but for everyone. Without our health we don’t have much. Investing in your health and vitality is the best investment you can make! When it comes to alcohol consumption, you might want to think twice on cracking open a bottle of wine daily if you want to maintain optimal health and wellness. If you or someone you know is dealing with alcoholism, here are some resources that can provide support.

  • 5 Best Brain-Boosting Hacks for Feeling Better

5 Best Brain-Boosting Hacks for Feeling Better

The most complex, intriguing, and arguably fascinating organ in our body is the brain. As a human race, we have come a long way in our understanding of how the brain works, but there is still much to learn. A fact that may just blow your mind is that scientists have found that there are approximately 86 billion neurons in the human brain! What are neurons? Well, in simple terms, the main function of neurons is that they’re information messengers. They send out information around the brain, spine, and body both electrically and chemically.

Perhaps one of the most amazing aspects about our brain is that they’re highly adaptable and capable of great change through neuroplasticity. This literally means you can re-wire the way you think, act, and feel with practice and giving the brain what it needs! The brain’s neuroplasticity allows it to recognize pathways, create connections, and sometimes even create new neurons.

Our brain and neurons enable us to live out our lives, from allowing us to have thoughts, make decisions, store memories, control emotions, allow for movement, and even keeps us breathing automatically! It’s easy to see just how important this essential organ is and that we should do what we can to keep it functioning at its best. Whether you’re looking to have better focus, feel happier, or improve your memory we’re going to cover 5 of the best brain-boosting hacks for feeling better all around! If you’re interested to dive deeper, keep on reading.

    Exercise Regularly

It comes as no surprise that one of the top brain-boosting hacks is exercising. Have you noticed the way you feel after a good sweat session? Physical activity not only positively impacts the health of our brain (which we will go into more detail about) but it also manages our weight, reduces the risk of disease, strengthens bones and muscles, and keeps the body in shape. When it comes to brain health in particular, one of the ways that exercise is beneficial is that it increases blood flow to the brain. Adequate blood flow for the brain is vital because it allows it to get the oxygen and nutrients it needs to function. Although most forms of exercise assist with blood flow some of the best are hot yoga and being in a sauna since thermal stress allows for better blood flow to the brain. A study from over 10 years ago even found that aerobic exercises such as biking, running, or swimming can enhance the expression of neuroplasticity biomarkers!

    Consuming healthy fats

This may come as as surprise, but did you know that our brain is made up of nearly 60% fat? Healthy fats are super important for proper brain function, especially omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fish oil supplements contain two kinds of fatty acids – EPA and DHA. These fatty acids are the core components of cellular structures like cell membranes. Researchers have found that despite the significant role Omega 3’s play in our brain health and even heart health, most people in the US aren’t getting enough of it in their diet. One of the easiest ways to ensure you’re getting enough Omega 3 fatty acids in your diet is through supplementation. This is especially helpful for picky eaters or those who don’t like fish because many of the supplements you can get are flavored or unflavored! Some other beneficial fats for brain health that you can incorporate into your diet include olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, seeds, and avocados!

    Deep Breathing

Breathing is a completely free and powerful tool you can use to regulate your nervous system bringing your body and brain into a state of rest and digest. Without realizing it, so many people are unconscious of how they breathe throughout the day. Quick, shallow breaths can often lead to activating the sympathetic nervous system (the feeling of fight or flight). Deep breathing also supports neuroplasticity in the brain resulting in being able to change our brain and reinvent ourselves at any age or anytime! Some of the other ways that deep breathing benefits the body includes stress relief, regulating cortisol, lowering heart rate, lowering blood pressure, reducing pain, and reducing anxiety. Here are some different breathing techniques you can implement to hack your brain on the daily!

    Belly breathing:

    1. Find a comfortable, quiet place to sit or lie down.
    2. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen.
    3. Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, allowing your diaphragm to expand and your abdomen to rise. Feel your hand on your abdomen move outward.
    4. Exhale slowly through your mouth, letting go of tension and allowing your abdomen to fall. Your chest should stay relatively still.
    5. Continue this slow and controlled breathing pattern, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.
    6. Focus on the rise and fall of your abdomen, and try to keep your chest movement minimal.
    7. Practice for a few minutes each day to improve your belly breathing technique and promote relaxation.

    Box breathing:

    1. Find a quiet place to sit or stand comfortably.
    2. Close your eyes and take a moment to relax.
    3. Inhale through your nose for a count of four seconds, filling your lungs completely.
    4. Hold your breath for a count of four seconds, keeping your lungs and body still.
    5. Exhale slowly and completely through your mouth for a count of four seconds.
    6. Pause and keep your breath out for another count of four seconds.
    7. Repeat this cycle for several minutes, maintaining a calm and steady rhythm.
    8. Focus on the even timing of each breath cycle, and try to clear your mind of distractions.
    9. Gradually, you can increase the count to five or six seconds for a more extended practice.
    10. Box breathing is an effective technique to reduce stress and anxiety, so use it whenever you need to relax or regain composure.

    Keep a consistent sleep schedule

At this point, it’s a well-known fact that not getting enough sleep impacts cognitive function. Quite literally, during sleeping toxins are flushed out of the brain. Sleeping allows for the body to recover and restore, but so many people aren’t getting enough of it! One of the best ways you can start to improve your sleep routine is by keeping a consistent sleep schedule. It’s not beneficial for our brains and bodies when we go to bed at different times every single night and have a scattered sleep schedule. Our bodies crave routine and familiarity when it comes to winding down at night and preparing for sleep. By implementing a nighttime routine that you can stick to while going to bed and waking up at the same time everyday you will begin to notice positive effects in how your sleep schedule shifts.

    Consider taking brain-supporting supplements

When it comes to our mind and body functioning at its best we certainly need adequate amounts of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients! With the busy lives we lead and the diets many of us tend to lean towards, we could be missing out on some potentially crucial vitamins that can make a big difference in how we feel and perform. For example, certain B vitamin deficiencies like Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12 may result in neurological symptoms or conditions such as depression, dementia, and overall cognitive decline. Taking a full-spectrum B complex supplement will ensure that all your B vitamin levels are met! Other supplements that can make a difference in brain health, especially lowering inflammation and reducing anxiety are Turmeric, Magnesium, and even adaptogens such as Rhodiola or Ashwagandha

Taking care of your vessel and brain doesn’t have to be overly complicated, and most of these hacks are just basic fundamentals of how human beings can operate to feel their best. It’s important to note that the brain is complex and powerful, therefore we shouldn’t take lightly even the unhealthy habits we participate in on a daily basis. By implementing these brain hacks and eliminating unhealthy habits like smoking, drinking, drugs, and stress, our brains and bodies will begin to feel the difference!

How to Naturally Take Care of Your Lungs and Respiratory System

Take a deep breath in for 5 seconds, hold that breath for 5 seconds, and now release that breath for 5 seconds. Didn’t that feel good? When we truly slow down to take a deep breath, we become present to the gift our lungs and respiratory system provide us with, the gift of breathing! We may think that it’s just our lungs that are responsible for breathing, but the truth is that our lungs actually work in unison with our respiratory system which is made up of the nose, mouth, throat, voice box, windpipe, and lungs. Keeping a strong respiratory system is very important for our health and quality of life.

In this blog we are going to discuss some of the best natural ways to properly take care of your lungs and everything in between to keep that breathing and beautiful filtration system working perfectly.

Quit smoking or don’t smoke at all

As cool and calming as smoking might feel in the moment, we promise you it’s never with the long-term effects. Cigarette smoking and smoking in general is the number one risk factor for lung cancer and other lung diseases. While smoking for one or two years may seem like it’s not doing any harm, the damage is really done over time, and it’s permanent. In cigarettes alone, there are more than 7,000 chemicals being inhaled. 70 of those actually contain very harmful substances that are known carcinogens. Our lungs contain something called alveoli, which are microscopic but do the hard work of the lungs. Smoking kills these air sacs by damaging the cells within them. Bottom line, for your lungs to stay strong and efficient throughout your life, it’s best to avoid smoking altogether.

    Exercise

Consistent and regular movement is so beneficial for the body, and benefits the lungs! Not only does exercise support the brain, manage weight, and reduce the risk of disease, but it also strengthens our muscles in the body including our lung muscles. As you exert energy in physical activity, the lungs and heart are working to supply additional oxygen to the muscles in the body. With time, the lungs and heart become more efficient with this process and is one of the reasons why you will be less likely to experience shortness of breath after working out for a while. If that isn’t reason enough to start moving your body, we don’t know what is!

    Eat more anti-inflammatory foods

Diet is one of the number one ways to reduce inflammation in the body and limit the risk for COPD and other diseases that impact the lungs. Foods that are rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, and plenty of vitamins are the key to taking care of all your organs and keeping your body happy! Here are some foods that you SHOULD and SHOULD NOT avoid when it comes to keeping your lungs thriving.

    You SHOULD avoid:

    • Processed meats: Many kinds of processed meats such as bacon, ham, sausage, and hot dogs contain a preservative known as nitrates. This preservative is used to prevent bacteria and even add a salty flavor, but studies have found that the nitrates in processed meats don’t do much good for the body and are even linked to health issues such as cancer.
    • Extremely salty foods: While reaching for a bag of chips might sound like a tasty idea in theory, it might not be the best decision for your lung health. The high amounts of salt and saturated fats increase water retention and the high saturated fats cause inflammation, this combination makes for impacted breathing even in the lung tissues.
    • White breads: A lot of the time, the white breads we buy at our grocery stores are highly processed. Since this grain is refined, it loses much of its nutritional value and can even impact the body and lungs poorly. If you’re to consume bread, your best bet is opting for a sprouted whole grain loaf, sourdough, or even oat bread!

Foods you SHOULD NOT avoid, (aka eat more of this):

    • Apples: They used to say, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” and for a good reason! Apples are very high in antioxidants and studies even show that eating a daily apple slows the decline in lung function for ex-smokers! Although all varieties of apples offer incredible benefits, one of the best is Red Delicious for overall nutrition.
    • Beetroot: This vibrant and hardy root vegetable is one of the best when it comes to lung health! Beets and their greens have been shown to lower blood pressure and support your intake of oxygen, which can help someone struggling to breathe. The nitrates that are naturally occuring in beets are phenomenal for enhancing athletic performance and the efficiency of mitochondria, which are the cells responsible for producing energy.
    • Turmeric: A root that has been used for thousands of years, used commonly as a spice in cooking and has extremely powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric has been used to support a number of conditions such as arthritis, respiratory infections, allergies, mental health, and more! There are many ways that you can enjoy turmeric and one of them is through supplementation! At NutraChamps, we have two different turmeric options to get your anti-inflammatory fill. We have both turmeric capsules and turmeric gummies available!
    • Red cabbage: Did you know that this cabbage is rich in something called anthocyanins? Which is a chemical compound found in deep purple, red, and blue pigments from plants. These anthocyanins have a number of health benefits from being antidiabetic, anticancer, antimicrobal, and more! They have also been shown to reduce decline in lung function. This just means, eat more of your purple vegetables!

    Take a lung detox supplement

    • Marshmallow Root Extract: This has been used for hundreds of years as a herbal remedy. It’s now used today for cough and sore throat relief benefits, among many other things.
    • Elecampane Root Extract: A magnificent herb from the sunflower family used for a variety of ailments that impact the lungs. As an expectorant, Elecampane supports asthma, bronchitis, and whooping cough. It’s also a potent antioxidant that supports the body in more ways than one.

For the most part, our body knows what to do in order to keep us functioning and strong, the important thing is that we learn to work with it and give it what it needs. Staying away from smoking, eating the right foods, exercising consistently, and taking supplements to assist lung strength are all amazing ways to take care of the respiratory system.

  • 5 Great Stress Management Techniques!

    5 Great Stress Management Techniques!

April is stress awareness month! The perfect time to reset & reflect on ways to better manage and deal with daily stressors that impact so many of us. Stress is unavoidable, whether it’s a deadline at work, financial concerns, or family drama, we all deal with stress every now and again. The point isn’t to completely eliminate stress, it’s to learn how to manage it.

In this article we are going to breakdown 5 excellent stress management techniques so you know how to take care of yourself, even when challenges arise!

    UNPLUG:

So many of us work office jobs that require staring at a screen for most of the day. If it’s not always staring at a screen then it’s being in and out of meetings, and using our brain power for 8 hours or more! Not to mention, a long and tiring commute that can come along with work. A lot of this can put stress on the eyes and mind. One of the best things you can do is unplug for a few hours a day.

When you get home from work, try to put your phone away and truly relax. Make a good meal, light a candle, take a bath, read a good book, or spend time with loved ones. These are excellent ways to give yourself the break you deserve.

    MOVEMENT

Exercise doesn’t just benefit the body, it benefits the brain too! Moving your body pumps up endorphins which are the brain’s feel-good neurotransmitter. Many people report changes in their mood, tension in the body, and better sleep.

Some of the best stress-busting activities include: yoga, walking, pilates, running, kick boxing, and tai chi.

    NUTRITION

When we’re stressed, many of us reach for junk food as comfort food. Things like sugar, fried foods, and carbohydrates might provide pleasure in the short-term, but definitely leave the body feeling more lethargic in the long-term. Some of the best foods to eat for stress are whole foods that contain abundant amounts of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.

Leafy greens, fatty fish, berries, oysters, and even dark chocolate contain essential nutrients to help brain health and the body.

    TALK IT OUT

Keeping things bottled up is never a good idea. It’s amazing what leaning on a friend, partner, or family can do for stress levels. Talking things out makes such a difference because it means you no longer have to carry the weight and burden yourself.

If your stress and anxiety seems out of control, speaking with a licensed professional can also be a good idea. One amazing website where you can find therapy at a lower cost is BetterHelp. This website offers a number of therapists based on what your needs are.

    MEDITATION

Quieting the mind is one of the greatest tools that we can learn. Meditation is one of the best ways to do this. Although it can be a challenge to sit still and focus on breathing, it’s a skill that takes time to practice and definitely pays off. Guided meditations are one of the best ways to help with stress and so many of them are available on an app called Insight Timer!

Practice these stress management tips with consistency and you’ll be sure to notice a difference in how you respond to external factors. Your body is always trying to look out for you by giving you signs, if you feel chronic stress, chances are you should really slow down. Take care of yourself because you deserve it!
